1. "The A Team" by Ed Sheeran
The worst things in life come free to us...-Acoustic. Sounds like music you hear in a cafe. Something you can play while reading. Soothing background music.
2. "Sing Together" by Train
You are the leaves of my family tree...
-Ukulele sweetness. Brings me to the beach, wind crushing my face, making slits out of my eyes to keep sand away, watching the sun, watching the splashes, watching lovers walk by on the shore.
3. "All Kinds of Kinds" by Miranda Lambert
Ilsa was an acrobat who went and fell in love with that Horatio the human cannonball...
-Country music! I love the mini stories in this song. Miranda Lambert, to me, takes after Jewel's lyric-sensibility circa Pieces of You and Natalie Maines' (Dixie Chicks) raw grit.
4. "Brokenhearted" by Karmin
I know you want it so come and get it, cheerio...
-Kitsch. Cheeky. Nicki Minaj meets Carly Rae Jepsen. Stuck in my head.
5. "Starships" by Nicki Minaj
Fuck who you want, and fuck who you like... -Super Bass 2.0. Grrrl Power yo! I still find the idea of a starship bizarre.
6. "Good Time" by Owl City featuring Carly Rae Jepsen
Woke up on the right side of the bed...
-Cute little dance-y ditty. Owl City drops the trademark cutesy, scrawny-boy-toying-with-his-xylophone sound and snorts David Guetta/Calvin Harris drug. Loves it when Carly goes "Whooo!"
7. "Both of Us" by B.o.B featuring Taylor Swift
Do it one time for the underdogs. Sincerely yours, from one of y'all...
-Chorus sounds like first verse of Taylor Swift's song, "Speak Now." Country singer + Rapper = OK. Not great, but OK.
8. "Fur Soft As Fur" by The Boy Least Likely To
Sometimes at work, I feel like a machine...
-Indie pop cuteness! Agree that this is what music will sound like if your stuffed toys formed a band.
9. "I Feel Better" by Gotye
Just when you think there's nothing you can do, a friendly face will bring you around...
-Sounds like something Cee Lo Green can sing. Sounds like a Motown song. Trumpets. The beat. Get perked up with this one.
10. "Sweet As Whole" by Sara Bareilles
I hate to think that I ruined the day of the dick and the queen of the high horse parade...
-Lighter side of Sara B. I like what she did with the chorus. Interesting to hear Sara B cussing. Very.
11. "Trespassing" by Adam Lambert
My heart is gold, my body is glass...
-Adam as funky leader of the marching band. I can already imagine him strutting on this one.
12. "Human" by Ellie Goulding
I hope I will get the chance to be someone...
-Enchanting. Folk-dance at its best. Lyrics brings me back to Wednesday morning classes when my teacher unlocks the secrets of poems.
13. "You are the One I Love" by Jon McLaughlin
It's hard to be me and you when all that everyone does is stare...
-Romance. Chivalry. Butterflies everywhere! Not McLaughin's best written song, but his repeating the title over and over works here. Convincing enough. Sincere enough.
14. "Good Intent" by Kimbra
But the air turns sombre and the night took heed...
-Quirky song. Toe-thumping song. Kimbra doesn't sound like Katy Perry here unlike in her duet with Gotye.
15. "National Anthem" by Lana Del Rey
You can't keep your hands off me, or your pants on...
-Something about Lana Del Rey that's so captivating. This wasn't one of my immediate favorites in her album, but after seeing the video, I welcomed this song to my playlist. Well done.
16. "One More Night" by Maroon 5
You and I get sore, then dysfunctional we stuck keeping score...
-Maroon 5 dives into the pop ocean. And stays there. Listening to this song makes me feel sorry for the band members. It sounds like Adam Levine pulling off a Gwen Stefani when she went solo.
17. "Home" by Phillip Phillips
I'm going to make this place your home...
-Lovely, lovely folksy song. Brings me to those times when I'm just so excited to get back home, see my loved ones, and jump in my bed to sleep. Brilliant, this Idol song.
18. "Keep Your Shoes" by Scissor Sisters
Twist and shout, boobies hanging all out...
-Sounds like Kylie-Adam Lambert-Scissor Sisters mash-up. A kick-ass remix better be on its way.
19. "Better with You" by Kris Allen
I see you smiling and know that it’s going to be okay...
-Happy Kris Allen song! Yeyy! Gotye's "I Feel Better," re-imagined in a Kris Allen song.
20. "Ghosts" by Chris Cornell
Somewhere is the memory of somebody I left behind...
-Here's a track to keep your roadtrip easy-breezy. Cornell tucks his raw rocker self and wears his gooey teen rocker dude.
Notes:
